MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers 9, San Diego 0

LOS ANGELES, Vicente Padilla carried a no-hitter into the seventh Wednesday and threw a two-hit gem in bringing the Los Angeles Dodgers a 9-0 decision over San Diego.

Padilla (5-3) has been in the major leagues for 11 seasons and this was only the fourth complete game and fourth shutout of his career.

He walked two in the second inning, one of them intentionally, but got out of that jam and then retired 14 Padres in a row before giving up back-to-back seventh-inning singles to Ryan Ludwick and Chase Headley.

Yorvit Torrealba then grounded into a double play to end the inning and Padilla finished off a 105-pitch effort by retiring the side in order in both the eighth and ninth. Padilla struck out nine.

His only shutout and only complete game over the last seven seasons came while he was with Texas in 2008.

Scott Podsednik had a two-run single as part of a three-run second to put the Dodgers in charge and they broke open the contest with a five-run eighth that featured a two-run double by Ryan Theriot and a two-run homer by Andre Ethier.

Los Angeles has won two in a row on the heels of a six-game losing streak and the Dodgers inched within seven games of the first-place Padres in the National League West.
