SAN DIEGO, (UPI) -- Adrian Gonzalez singled in Aaron Cunningham with two out in the ninth Friday, completing a rally that gave the San Diego Padres a 3-2 win over Baltimore.
The Orioles took a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth, but Baltimore reliever David Hernandez promptly gave up the tying and winning runs.
The outcome symbolized Baltimore's struggling season, which has seen the Orioles win only four times in their last 22 games. Their 18 total victories are five fewer than any other team in the majors.
Hernandez (2-6) walked Chase Headley on four pitches to open the bottom of the ninth, Jerry Hairston singled and Cunningham loaded the bases by reaching on a bunt single.
Pinch-hitter Nick Hundley then struck out but David Eckstein tied the game with an RBI base hit to right.
Tony Gwynn next grounded into a fielder's choice, with Hairston being thrown out at home. That gave Baltimore a chance to get out of the inning, but Gonzalez hit the first pitch from Hernandez into right field to end the game.
Despite giving up the go-ahead run in the ninth, Heath Bell (3-0) picked up the victory.
The Padres moved a game in front of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the lead in the National League West.
