MLB: Washington 11, St. Louis 10 (13 inn.)
WASHINGTON, Nyjer Morgan scored from third on an infield single by Ian Desmond with one out in the 13th inning Thursday to give Washington a wild 11-10 win over St. Louis.
St. Louis rallied for four runs in the ninth to take a two-run lead and the Nationals then tied it in the bottom half of the inning.
The game featured the 400th career home run for Albert Pujols, who reached that plateau in his 10th major league season. Pujols is the third-youngest player to hit 400 homers, but he got to that number in fewer games than anyone in baseball history.
It was his 34th homer of the year and came during a four-run third that gave the Cardinals a 5-3 lead.
The Nationals took an 8-6 advantage into the ninth but the Cardinals rallied for a 10-8 advantage. Randy Winn broke an 8-8 tie in the inning with a two-run single.
Washington forced extra innings when Roger Bernadina hit a two-run homer with one out in the ninth off Ryan Franklin.
Pujols was intentionally walked twice in extra innings, once with the bases empty and two out in the 11th and again with a runner on second and two away in the 13th.
The Nationals ended a four-game losing streak. St. Louis has dropped three straight and fell four games behind idle first-place Cincinnati in the National League Central.
Doug Slaten (4-1), the eighth Washington pitcher, worked the top of the 13th to get the win. Blake Hawksworth (4-8) gave up the winning run.
