NEW YORK, Albert Pujols singled in Skip Schumaker from third with two out in the 13th inning Wednesday, giving the St. Louis Cardinals an 8-7 win over the New York Mets.

New York trailed by six runs before it came to bat for the first time, then rallied to tie it in the eighth.

Although both sides threatened in the ninth, neither could put a runner in scoring position in extra innings until the Cardinals

broke through in the 13th for a win that kept them tied for with Cincinnati for first place in the National League Central .

Pedro Feliciano (2-6) hit Schumaker with a pitch with one away in the 13th and Felipe Lopez drew a walk. After Jon Jay grounded into a fielder's choice that moved Schumaker to third, Pujols hit a 1-1 pitch to left for the game-winning RBI.

Ryan Franklin worked a perfect bottom half of the inning for his 19th save, preserving the win for Mike MacDougal.

MacDougal (1-0) worked the 12th inning as the seventh of eight Chicago pitchers. He has been in the majors for nine seasons and this was his 15th career victory.

Matt Holliday drove in three runs for the Cardinals, two of them with a first-inning homer that touched off a six-run frame.
