Monfils, Montanes to vie for Mercedes Cup
STUTTGART, Germany, Gael Monfils of France and Spain's Albert Montanes will face off for the Mercedes Cup title after each won semifinal matches Saturday in Stuttgart, Germany.
Monfils, the third seed, was forced into a third set by Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver before prevailing 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, thanks to four aces in the decisive final set at Tennis Club Weissenhof.
No. 5 seed Montanes, meanwhile, get past fourth-seeded countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Montanes claimed a win in his only other meeting with Monfils, which came in 2005.
The Frenchman will be seeking his third career singles crown and first of the year, while Montanes will be vying for his fifth ATP title and second this season after taking the Estoril event in May.
