Mountie missing after capsizing in river
MAYO, Ontario, A Canadian mounted police officer went missing when his boat capsized after experiencing motor trouble, police said.

Constable Michael Potvin, 26, of Ontario, was in the aluminum Royal Canadian Mounted Police boat on a maintenance run in the Stewart River with another Mountie from the village of Mayo before Potvin went missing Tuesday night, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Potvin was attempting to swim to shore when he disappeared. Police say he was not wearing his life jacket, as required, but gave no reason why.

The other officer held onto the disabled boat while Potvin tried to make it to shore. People ashore went out to rescue the officer who stayed with the boat, but Potvin was lost from view, the CBC reported.

Local residents and search-and-rescue personnel have been assisting the RCMP with search efforts, the CBC said.

Rogers said Thursday that the search is still considered active and that he hopes Potvin will be found alive and safe downstream, the Montreal Gazette reported.

Investigators from Human Resources and Skills Development, Canada's labor program, and Transport Canada were at the site Thursday to look into the incident, the Gazette said.
