N.Y. couple wed in 'piano' ceremony
NEW YORK, (UPI) -- A public art project meant to take music to the masses inspired a New York couple to exchange vows on a bustling East Village street corner, observers say.
Raquel Hecker and Michael Volchok chose one of the 60 pianos installed in public spaces across New York as the centerpiece for a simple wedding ceremony Friday at E. 10th Street and Second Avenue, the New York Daily News reported.
"We thought we would go to City Hall," Hecker said, "and then I heard the public art project 'Play Me, I'm Yours' was going on and I thought, 'Wouldn't it be fun if we could get married outside?'"
The couple stood beneath a handmade huppah, the traditional Jewish marriage canopy, while a friend played their favorite songs on the piano.
The couple had planned an April wedding but postponed it when Volchok's 80-year-old father needed heart surgery.
They turned to friends to help with the impromptu ceremony, the Daily News said.
"Everyone came together to help us so we were able to make it happen here," Hecker said.
