Nationals sign top pick Bryce Harper

WASHINGTON, The Washington Nationals came to terms with top overall pick Bryce Harper just before a midnight Monday deadline, the team said.

The much-hyped Harper, only 17 years old, is a catcher whom the Nationals will convert to an outfielder. He passed up his final two years of high school to attend the College of Southern Nevada, where he hit 31 homers and drove in 98 runs in only 66 games, breaking the school's previous home run record of 12.

He hit .443 and compiled a .526 on-base percentage.

Harper won the Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the best amateur player in the country.
