Nearly 150 arrests in Toronto protests
TORONTO, (UPI) -- Toronto police said they arrested nearly 150 people in protests that lasted into early Sunday morning during the weekend summit of global economic leaders.

Thousands of protesters marched in Toronto Saturday in a series of demonstrations that were largely peaceful until some marchers started to smash windows, damage storefronts and set fire to police cars, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported. Riot police intercepted protesters and prevented them from reaching the sites of meetings scheduled for Sunday among leaders of the G20, the newspaper said.

Police used riot shields, batons, tear gas, plastic bullets and pepper spray guns to repel demonstrators. Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair said late Saturday officers had arrested nearly 150 people.

Sunday's G20 meetings come one day after the G8 summit in Huntsville, Ontario, north of Toronto.
