NEW YORK (AFP) – Lawrence Taylor, probably the fiercest defensive player in American football history, was arraigned on rape and prostitution charges in an alleged assault on a 16-year-old girl on Thursday.

Taylor was charged with third-degree rape and patronizing a prostitute in the case, which authorities say a 16-year-old runaway girl was brought to his room at the Holiday Inn Holidome hotel in Suffern, New York, against her will.

A Rockland County judge set bail at 75,000 dollars.

Arthur Aidala, a lawyer for the former New York Giants linebacker, said in press conference after the arraignment that Lawrence "is denying and preparing to fight each and every one of these charges."

Taylor, who competed recently with little success on the reality TV show "Dancing With The Stars," was arrested early Thursday at his hotel, Christopher St. Lawrence, supervisor of the town of Ramapo, said.

Ramapo Chief of Police Peter Brower declined to comment on whether Taylor knew the girl was one year under New York's legal age of consent, but he said: "Ignorance is not an excuse as to an individual's age."
