No penalty yet for Utah oil spill
SALT LAKE CITY, (UPI) -- Environmental officials in Utah said they will review fines for Chevron after a violation notice is sent to the company for an oil spill in the Red Butte Creek.
Officials are busy cleaning up the Red Butte Creek watershed nearly a month after an interstate oil pipeline ruptured and spilled more than 33,600 gallons of oil into the stream.
Walt Baker, who heads the Utah Division of Water Quality, said regulators weren't moving forward with the penalty phase yet, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
"There will be no discussion of penalties or fines with this," he said. "That will be discussed later, after (Chevron) has responded (to the violation notice)."
Chevron said the cleanup effort is nearly finished. More than half of the 800 barrels of oil spilled have been recovered and about 50 barrels of oil have evaporated, the company said.
Chevron faces a $225,000 bill from Utah to cover cleanup costs.
