November vote could cut women in Congress

WASHINGTON, -- Political analysts say the U.S. November elections could result in the first decrease in the number of women in Congress in many years.
David Wasserman, an analyst for the Cook Political Report, told the Los Angeles Times there could be as many as eight fewer women in the House and two fewer in the Senate after the elections.'
That would be a reversal of relatively steady gains women have made on Capitol Hill since the Kennedy administration, the Times said Sunday.
The scenario is based the idea of the Democrats taking a hit in November. Of the 90 women in Congress, 69 are Democrats.
"Republican candidates in these really promising seats are men," said Wasserman.
The Times said the prospect of a setback in the numbers game did not sit well with leaders of the women's movement. "That is not going to happen," said Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women.
