NYC to pay ex-inmate record $9.9 million

NEW YORK, (UPI) -- A man who spent 19 years in prison before his murder conviction was overturned will get a $9.9 million check from the city of New York, officials said Thursday.

The New York Times said the settlement with Barry Gibbs is the largest personal settlement in the city's history. He previously received $1.9 million from the state.

Gibbs's conviction in the 1986 strangulation of a 27-year-old prostitute was overturned in 2005 when evidence turned up that he had been framed by city police Detective Louis J. Eppolito, now serving life in prison for his role in mob-related slayings, the Times said.

The following year Gibbs sued the city and the trial for that civil case was to have started in federal court this month.

"The settlement I'm happy with; it was my bottom-line settlement," Gibbs told the Times.

He said the years-long experience had left him with "permanent scars."

"It's been a long road. I've been through a lot, and it was very traumatic for me," said Gibbs, now 62 and beset with serious ailments.
