Ohio trucker charged with dumping corpse
COLUMBUS, Ohio, An Ohio truck driver has been charged with dumping the corpse of a Tennessee woman he claimed died in his cab after hitching a ride, authorities said.
Trenton Derenberger, 33, of Bucyrus, was arrested Saturday and charged with abuse of a corpse, a felony, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch reported.
Derenberger told police Kim Vaughn, 36, of Memphis hitched a ride in Knoxville, Tenn., and suddenly died in his truck.
Derenberger did not alert authorities in Tennessee, police said, and drove 16 hours to Ohio before dumping the corpse at an abandoned highway rest stop.
Ohio police would not release details on what Derenberger told detectives or why he didn't contact authorities, the Dispatch said.
"Obviously, the experience of being in a tractor cab, of having a person pass away on you that you didn't want to be associated with, scared him," Lt. Dale Parish said. "Out of fright, a person might do a number of different things."
An autopsy has not provided immediate answers to the cause of death or whether there was violence, and police say a key in the case will be toxicology tests, the Dispatch reported.
