Osborne plans cuts in disability benefits
TORONTO, (UPI) -- Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer said in Toronto he would target disability payments as part of his budget-cutting program.
As many as 2.6 million people who receive between $104 and $138 per week would be affected by the cuts, The Times of London reported Monday.
The chancellor, George Osborne, made his plans public at the Group of 20 summit, where he was in the company of other world leaders looking to cut their budgets.
"Of course, we have to look across the ... welfare bill and of course we have to look at individual benefits," he said.
Cutting disability payments was not revealed last week when Osborne announced an austerity budget plan.
The disability benefit now costs $18.8 billion per year, as part of a total welfare bill of $290 billion per year.
Osborne said the choice was between cuts in benefits or cuts in other services, like schools.
