PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) - As of Wednesday, it became illegal to sell lottery tickets to people under 19 on P.E.I.

Previously, selling to minors was a matter of breaking Atlantic Lottery Corporation regulations, but there was no law. During a sting operation by ALC last year 28 of 35 retailers tested were caught selling lottery tickets to kids.
Paul Haddad of Black and White Convenience in Charlottetown told CBC News Wednesday he was surprised by the new law. He said he's always applied the cigarette rules to lotto tickets.
"It's not that we're making a big amount off lottery tickets really. It kind of brings people in," said Haddad.
"A big money maker, it's not. It's just something to have with the rest of the things we do have in the store."
Provincial Treasurer Wes Sheridan said the same rules applying to tobacco sales will cover lottery tickets, and retailers can expect to pay the same penalties.
