OMAHA, Neb. -- The pilot of a light plane walked away from a crash landing just northeast of Omaha's Eppley Airfield on Thursday morning, authorities said.

Airport executive director Steve Coufal said the pilot reported engine problems a little after 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

The single-engine Cessna went down on the river side of a levee that protects the airport from the Missouri River. It ended up on the edge of a pond, with damage to the tail and a wing.

The left wing tip of the plane ended up in the pond.

Dr. Stephen Walters, 36, a dentist from Butte, Mont., who was alone in the plane, was not seriously injured. He was taken to a hospital just as a precaution.

Veteran pilots told KETV the crash could have been much worse.

"It's completely black. There's no lights or anything, so he hit it in the right place," said Jerome Howard, who flew over the wreckage on Thursday.

If the plane had landed any differently, "It will sink, and the weather, being like it is this time of year, you're going to be facing hypothermia real quick," he said.

He applauded the pilot's skill.

"In this incident, I believe he was prepared for it and that's why he walked away," Howard said.

The FAA said the plane left Montana and was bound for Kentucky.
