Winnipeg police say they are looking for a young man responsible for a sexual assault against a seven-year-old girl.

Police said in a news release the assault happened early Saturday morning when the girl was sleeping on the main floor in a home near the corner of Manitoba Avenue and Andrews Street. There was at least one adult sleeping nearby.

At about 3:30 a.m. local time, a boy who looked about 16 entered the front door of the home, found the child and sexually assaulted her. That's when the girl woke up and saw him flee, police said. She wasn't physically injured in the attack.

Police were called at approximately 4:15 a.m.

Police say the girl didn't know the suspect or that he had come in through an unlocked front door. He's described as having a thin build and short, dark hair, slicked back with gel.

The Child Abuse Unit is investigating. Anyone with information about who he might be is asked to call police at 986-6245 or CrimeStoppers at 786-8477.
