A 60-year-old man is undergoing an assessment in a Halifax hospital after police say he told them his home was "rigged to explode."

Halifax Regional Police were called to the home on Primrose Street in the north end of Dartmouth around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

When they arrived a woman told officers she'd been assaulted by the man who was still inside the house.

"Members went to the door and had a conversation with the suspect at which time he refused to come out," said Sgt. Greg Robertson. "Members further observed that he had a weapon in his hand, it was a large knife. Officers spoke with him for about 45 minutes. There was an indication that he was about to cause himself harm and we eventually made a decision to enter the house and he was taken into custody at that time."

During the standoff several streets around the home were blocked off.

Robertson said police were concerned because of the number of children that live in the area.

The suspect is facing charges of domestic assault and uttering death threats.
