Portland, Ore., police investigated Gore

PORTLAND, Ore., (UPI) -- Prosecutors in Oregon say they took a second look in 2009 at a woman's 2006 allegation that former Vice President Al Gore made unwanted sexual contact with her.

The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office confirmed to The (Portland) Oregonian Wednesday that it had learned of the 2009 police follow-up after the National Inquirer tabloid reported on the 2006 allegation.

"If the complainant and the Portland Police Bureau wish to pursue the possibility of a criminal prosecution, additional investigation by the bureau will be necessary and will be discussed with the Portland Police Bureau,'' county District Attorney Michael Schrunk said in a prepared statement.

The woman, identified only as a masseuse, had told Portland police four years ago the incident with Gore occurred Oct. 24, 2006, at Hotel Lucia. The prosecutor's office was briefed by police in late 2006 and January 2007.

"We were told the woman was not willing to be interviewed by the Portland Police Bureau and did not want a criminal investigation to proceed,'' Schrunk said in his statement.

The woman went back to police in January 2009 to renew her allegation but detectives concluded there was insufficient evidence to pursue the case, The Oregonian said. She then called police this month to request a copy of her statement and indicated she wanted to amend it.

Gore and his wife Tipper announced this month they are separating after 40 years of marriage. A family spokeswoman said the former vice president wouldn't comment on the masseuse's allegation.
