Red Wings' Maltby announces retirement
DETROIT, -- Detroit Red Wings forward Kirk Maltby said Tuesday he is retiring from the NHL after a 16-year career.
Known as a "grinder" who used physical play to slow down opponents, Maltby won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings and served on the team's famed "Grind Line" with Kris Draper and Joe Kocur.
Maltby, 37, missed the playoffs last year due to surgery on his arthritic shoulder after compiling six points over 52 regular-season games. He didn't earn a spot on the Red Wings' roster this year and was sent to Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League, but opted not to report.
Maltby scored 128 goals and 260 points in 1,072 regular season games over 16 seasons with the Wings and Edmonton Oilers. He added 16 goals and 15 assists in 169 career playoff games.
