Report: Yankees acquire Lance Berkman
NEW YORK, The New York Yankees are set to announce the acquisition of first baseman Lance Berkman from the Houston Astros, the New York Post reported Friday.

Berkman gave his permission to the Astros to make the trade, the newspaper said. He has the right to reject a deal because he has 10 years of major league service and has been with the same team for the last five years.

Under baseball rules, a trade involving such a player cannot be announced until 24 hours after he has agreed to it. Berkman was not in the lineup Friday when the Astros hosted Milwaukee.

Although Berkman has spent much of his career at first base, he would likely become a designated hitter for the Yankees since, they have Mark Teixeira playing first.

Berkman is in the final year of a six-year contract and is scheduled to make $14.5 million this season. He has spent his entire 12-year career with Houston and is batting .245 with 13 homers and 49 RBI in 85 games this season.

He has a career batting average of .296 and has been named to the National League All-Star team five times.

New York opened a three -game series with Tampa Bay Friday, leading the second-place Rays by two games in the American League East

coming into the series.
