Two bank employees are being credited after chasing and catching a man who had allegedly just robbed a branch of the Bank of Montreal in North Vancouver.

The employees — one of them the bank's manager — caught up with the alleged robber just as he was climbing into a taxi on Espalanade just after 1 p.m. PT Tuesday, RCMP Cpl. Peter DeVries said Thursday.

The taxi driver helped them hold the man until police arrived, said DeVries.

He said no one was injured and the suspect was not armed. All the money from the robbery was recovered.

DeVries commended the actions of "three conscientious citizens," but warned that the pursuit of suspected criminals is not always the best course.

"Police must always caution people against placing themselves at risk, [but] we also want to recognize these brave people."

Charged with one count of robbery is Gabriel Williams, said police.

Police are investigating Williams in connection with a number of other robberies in the Lower Mainland in recent weeks and have recommended four additional robbery charges be laid against him, said DeVries.

He said Williams is currently being held in custody.
