Roddick posts first-round Cincinnati win
CINCINNATI, Andy Roddick needed three sets Monday to defeat Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky in the first round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters.
The ninth-seeded American blew a second-set tiebreaker but then regrouped to breeze through the third set and post a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 decision over Stakhovsky, moving on to the second round in Cincinnati.
Roddick won the U.S. Open tune-up event in 2003 and 2006 and was the runner-up in 2005.
Also in Monday's first round, No. 10 seed David Ferrer of Spain defeated Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; No. 13 Jurgen Melzer of Austria dispatched Colombian qualifier Santiago Giraldo 6-1, 6-4; and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland upset 14th-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-3.
American Sam Querrey reached the second round, downing German Philipp Petzschner 6-1, 6-4.
