Rodgers: I was asked to join Aerosmith

BOSTON, (UPI) -- Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers told the Boston Herald Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry approached him about taking over for lead singer Steven Tyler in 2009.

Perry and Tyler, who founded the band in 1969, had a falling-out last year that left the future of Aerosmith up in the air. Since then, Tyler has sought help for various medical issues and undergone treatment for drug addiction.

However, before Perry and Tyler patched things up and the band began performing together again, Perry talked to Rodgers about replacing Tyler last November.

Rodgers told the Herald he declined the offer, encouraging Perry to work it out with Tyler instead of trying to find a new lead singer.

"Joe came up to me and said, 'We want to work, and Steve doesn't want to,'" Rodgers recalled. "But I said to him right off the bat: 'Really, you guys have such a great thing going that it would be a shame (if I went) anywhere near it. You should think about patching it up and go on being the great band that everybody knows and loves.'"
