Rower Roz completed trans-Pacific voyage
MADANG, Papua New Guinea, (UPI) -- Britain's Roz Savage says she feels like she made thousands of new friends after she rowed solo across the Pacific Ocean.

Savage, 42, rowed Friday into Papua New Guinea where she was greeted by about 5,000 people who saluted her completion of a 46-day journey aimed at focusing attention on the problems created by climate change and plastic litter in the ocean.

"It was phenomenal," the former investment banker told The Times of London. "I feel like I have 5,000 new friends."

The trans-Pacific crossing completed two-thirds of a long-running project to row around the world. Savage had earlier made her way across the Atlantic and is already looking to navigate the Indian Ocean.

The Pacific leg was carried out in two stages; San Francisco to Hawaii, and Hawaii to Madang in Papua New Guinea. Savage described the latest trip as fairly uneventful. She lost 22 pounds and had only one close call when she jumped over the side to retrieve a piece of equipment and had to hustle to catch up with her drifting boat.
