SANTA MONICA (KTLA) -- Authorities say a big rig driver who apparently suffered a heart attack triggered a multi-vehicle pile-up on the 405 Freeway in Santa Monica that backed up traffic for miles through West L.A.
At about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the runaway big rig smashed into the center divider on the northbound 405 near Santa Monica Boulevard.
Authorities say the driver of the truck driver lost control due to an unknown medical problem.
The semi truck continued on the freeway out of control, hitting at least a dozen vehicles before coming to a stop.
Paramedics took the big-rig driver, 58-year-old William Bradfield, of Huntington Beach, to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. He later died of a possible heart attack.
One driver complained in another car complained about pain, but no one else was hurt, CHP spokeswoman Officer Monica Posada said.
A SigAlert was issued for the three left lanes of the northbound 405 for nearly two hours.
Rush hour traffic was backed up for miles to the 90 Freeway, and back onto the westbound 10 Freeway.
