Rybarikova upsets Safina at Unicef Open
'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, (UPI) -- The Unicef Open got under way with a major upset Sunday when Magdalena Rybarikova toppled No. 2 seed Dinara Safina at 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands.
Rybarikova, of Slovakia, rallied after dropping the first set in a tiebreak, going on to post a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4 victory at Autotron Rosmalen -- her first career win over the former top-ranked Russian in three meetings.
In other first-round action Sunday, seventh-seeded German Andrea Petkovic defeated Czech Petra Kvitova 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia also moved on with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Briton Laura Robson.
