A woman visiting from Saskatchewan has died in a house fire on the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation reserve in Manitoba, local officials say.
The fire broke out on the reserve, about 100 kilometres south of Winnipeg, around 5 a.m. CT Saturday.
"There were a whole bunch of ambulance and fire trucks on the road here," Prairie Nelson, a family member who lives next to where the fire took place, told CBC News on Saturday before the death was announced. "My stepmom wasn't doing good and my sister was hurt really bad."
Relatives have identified the woman who died as Daphne Benjoe. Her daughter, a 16-year-old, was being treated in hospital in Winnipeg for injuries, including smoke inhalation, suffered in the fire.
A third person was also in the home at the time of the fire, but managed to get out uninjured.
The home was nothing more than a smouldering ruin later in the day.
"Fire crews attended to the scene within minutes," CBC News reporter Veronica Hall said at the scene Saturday afternoon. "But neighbours say they had trouble fighting the blaze because hydrants had been frozen."
There was no word on the cause of the fire.
