Seeds Kvitova, Arvidsson lose in Slovenia

PORTOROZ, Slovenia, Seeded players Petra Kvitova, Dominika Cibulkova and Sofia Arvidsson were straight-set losers Tuesday in the first round of the Slovenia Open.

Kvitova, seeded second, failed to take advantage of serve issues by Stefanie Voegele and lost 7-5, 6-2. Voegele landed just 41 percent of her first serves and had five double faults but still won 61 percent of the points on serve.

Ksenia Pervak defeated the fifth-seeded Cibulkova 6-1, 6-3 with seven breaks in eight Cibulkova service games.

Arvidsson, the No. 8 seed, won only one point in the second set against the serve of Johanna Larsson in losing 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.

Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic had six double faults and lost her serve three times but still defeated Bojana Javanovski 6-3, 6-3. Jankovic won more points (38-34) off Javanovski's serve and piled up six service breaks.

Three other seeded players also won in straight sets. No. 3-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova stopped Alberta Brianti 7-5, 6-1; fourth-seeded Sara Errani topped Anna Tatishvili 7-6 (7-1), 6-4; and seventh-seeded Polona Hercog took out Elena Bovina 6-3, 6-3.

Qualifiers Anastasiya Yakimova and Alexandra Panova also reached the second round. Panova stopped Marina Erakovic 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) and Yakimova was a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 winner over Masa Zec Peskiric.

Other first-round wins were posted Tuesday by Maria Elena Camerin, Katarina Srebotnik and Ksenia Pervak.
