WASHINGTON – Senators were so lavish in their praise for Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman that the nominee to be ambassador to China quipped he hopes he does as well at his funeral.

Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry says the nomination of Huntsman — a Republican — by President Barack Obama honors the best tradition of bipartisanship in foreign policy.

Huntsman is considered a potential GOP presidential candidate in 2012.

He was introduced at the hearing Thursday by Senator John McCain of Arizona and Utah's senators, Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett.

Huntsman says his priorities as ambassador would include working with China to shore up the global economy and persuading North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons effort.
