Sewage-pumping boat called the Down Winder
SALISBURY, Mass., -- The folks at the Salisbury, Mass., Harbor Commission put scatological humor aside and named their new sewage-pumping boat the Down Winder.
Scores of people entered the boat-naming contest and The Daily News of Newburyport reported Monday the commission pored over such suggestions as Headhunter, Potty Mouth, Poop Sloop, Discharge Barge, Floater, Poo Loo, Muck Sucker, Dung Dingy, Ship's Log, Captain's Log, Siphonette, Flapper, Mudhen, Winnie the Poo, Poo Pourrie, Gobbledygook and Doody Call before settling on the name proffered by boater Richard Calderwood.
"We'll answer to the Down Winder," Salisbury Harbormaster Ray Pike said. "The commissioners made the decision on Thursday night. It was a lot of fun.
"We had a lot of laughs and chuckles. There were a lot of puns."
The pump-out travels from boat to boat to extract onboard septic systems, a utilitarian, if not glamorous, duty.
