Sheriff convicted of robberies
CHESAPEAKE, Va., A Chesapeake, Va., city sheriff who used piled-up bills as an excuse for a seven-month robbery spree was sentenced to 20 years in prison, court documents show.

John Michael Keane II, 33, who was fired the day after his February arrest, had pleaded guilty in May to robbing a branch of the BB&T bank three times from July 2009 to February, The Virginian-Pilot reported Monday.

He made off with a total of $10,548.

Keane, who had been a sheriff for a dozen years and had several officers speak on his behalf, had little hope of a light sentence because an ancillary firearms conviction carried with it a minimum sentence of 13 years' imprisonment,The Virginian-Pilot said.
