Spc. Neftaly Platero has been charged with premeditated murder in the deaths of two fellow soldiers.

The Army has charged a U.S. soldier who was serving in Iraq with premeditated murder in the deaths of two comrades, the U.S. military command in Baghdad said Wednesday.

A verbal altercation preceded the shootings September 23 in Fallujah, Iraq, a U.S. military official said last month.

Spc. Neftaly Platero, who is being held in Kuwait, is charged in the shooting deaths of Spc. John Carrillo Jr. and Pfc. Gebrah P. Noonan, the military said. He is also charged with premeditated attempted murder in the wounding of a unidentified third soldier, the military said without giving further details.

The criminal investigation is ongoing.

Platero, 32, is from Kingwood, Texas, a suburb of Houston, CNN affiliate KTRK reported.

Carrillo, 20, of Stockton, California, and Noonan, 26, of Watertown, Connecticut, died of injuries sustained in a "noncombat" incident, the U.S. Department of Defense said.

They were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.

"The next of kin of the victims were notified that it appears a verbal altercation broke out involving four soldiers, after which the suspect allegedly took his weapon and began shooting the other soldiers," a military official said after the incident. "The Army is conducting an investigation into the deaths."

The case will be processed in accordance with the rules for military courts-martial, the Army said.
