A 25-year-old man was arrested and charged with possession of an illegal weapon after police raided a home in St. John's Thursday.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said the man had a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition.

The RNC Tactical Response Unit converged on a house near Mundy Pond just before 4 pm.

They broke the door to the residence in with a battering ram and were inside the house in seconds.

A short time later, a suspect was led out in handcuffs. It all happened so quickly, he didn't have time to get dressed.

Police are not saying what led them to the man. They only said that the arrest is part of an on-going investigation.

Plainclothes officers left the house carrying a large black duffel bag, and a small metal box.

Police said the man is expected to appear in court Friday.
