GALLUP, N.M. -- The body a 55-year-old man was found ravaged in the Sundance community on Thursday, after McKinley County sheriff's deputies said, he was mauled by a pack of dogs.

Around 1:20 p.m., deputies arrived on the scene and saw a pack of dogs gnawing on the corpse. Sheriff's deputies said they didn't know if the victim was alive or dead at the time of the dog attack.

The man was later identified as Larry Armstrong.

McKinley County sheriff's Lt. Tom Mumford said that the dogs appeared to be malnourished when they chased them away from Armstrong's body.

"The dogs tried to come back, so we had to use pepper spray to keep them away while the EMTs attended to the victim," Mumford said. "The dogs, they were downright angry. You could see their ribs sticking out."

Since the incident occurred on tribal land, the FBI and Navajo police will conduct a joint investigation.

Deputies said the man could have been hit by the vehicle before the attack because of tire marks and vehicle debris found at the scene. Armstrong also had a history of seizures.

The Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque will determine the cause of Armstrong's death.
