Static over transgender job protections

WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- Congressional conservatives say they are ramping up opposition to a bill to provide employment protection for gay and transgender workers in the United States.

The main concern opponents have with the Employment Non-Discrimination Act is the possibility of transgender people in sensitive positions such as teaching in school, the Washington Post said Saturday.

The Traditional Values coalition raised the alarm in a recent statement that said: "Your children will be trapped in classes taught by drag queens and transgender activists."

A spokesman for Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., said: "If the transgender language is included, that's just too far."

Although Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and other sponsors of the bill dismissed the drag queen concerns as overblown, other members of the House told the Post the bill was probably a little too much for some moderates to get behind in an election year.
