Fifteen homes have been evacuated after a storm surge hit Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula on Friday morning, washing several fishing buildings out to sea.
Punishing waves in the St. Lunaire-Griquet area, near the northernmost tip of the island, destroyed several wharfs and fishing stages — wooden buildings used to store fishing equipment.
One cove, known locally as "the beach," was hardest hit, said St. Lunaire-Grique resident Brad Sheppard, a town councillor.
Sheppard said residents of the 15 homes left voluntarily after warnings from council and the RCMP.
Most people in the community of more than 650 live on the sheltered side of the cove, but council was considering asking some 50 residents who were potentially at risk to leave their homes, Sheppard said.
"It's complete devastation."
Only three stages are still standing on the side of the cove open to the waves, Sheppard said. A road in the area has also been damaged.
Sheppard said the community is bracing for another possible surge as high tide rolls in.
