WHDH-TV - Plum Island home torn down due to beach erosion

NEWBURY, Mass. -- Strong storms are damaging a home on Plum Island, and now that home is being torn down.

The home which was once valued at a million dollars is now flattened, and paying the price for its location.

The home at 27 Annapolis Way was another victim of Plum Island’s hungry sea, which devoured so much of the area’s beach that the home was ordered to be demolished.

The banking beneath it and the east wall on the foundation ripped away by storms.

The home was condemned last March, and damaged further by blizzard-like conditions last month. But with another major storm approaching this week, town authorities had to move quickly.

“We probably would have lost a section of the building, if not all of it,” said an official.

Neighbors know it’s a matter of time before beach erosion claims another. They witnessed the Christmas nor'easter devour the last of the banking beneath the home, along with pieces of the foundation.

“I happened to glance over and all the cinder blocks fell in the sand. We’re losing sand on a daily basis here,” said one neighbor.

Residents say most of the homes were years before the recent fears of coastal storms that have really intensified erosion.

“I have seen the beach come and go so many times in all those years. It’s amazing what nature does,” said one woman.

Two other homes are in danger of crumbling. Officials say they will monitor them on a day by day basis.
