Swedish ex-police chief on trial for rape
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, (UPI) -- A former senior police officer in Sweden went on trial Tuesday on charges that include chaining and sexually assaulting teenage girls.
Goran Lindberg formally denied all the charges except eight counts of buying sex, the Swedish news agency TT reported. He is charged with 23 counts.
One of his alleged victims was only 14.
Lindberg was formerly the police chief in Uppsala, the fourth largest city in Sweden and home to the oldest university in Scandinavia. He was known as a lecturer on sexual equality and sexual harassment.
"He denies the crime and repudiates the individual claims," his lawyer, Karl Harling, told the court.
On Monday, a district court judge ruled most of the case would be open to the news media. But he said the identities of the victims would be shielded.
The prosecution evidence includes a bag allegedly seized from Lindberg that contained handcuffs and leashes along with other sex toys.
