Girl Killed, Sister Critically Injured In Hit-And-Run

INDIANAPOLIS -- A 16-year-old girl was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Indianapolis' south side late Saturday night that police believe involved alcohol.

The crash happened just before 11 p.m. at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Shelby Street.

Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson said an SUV was stopped at a traffic light when the driver of a Nissan Altima plowed into it.

Megan Ratliff, 16, was partially thrown from the SUV as it started to roll over because of the impact of the crash, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It did set the sport-utility vehicle on its side, and we believe when that action took place, that's when the passenger was killed," Thompson said.

The driver of the SUV, Kayla Ratliff, 19, Megan's sister, was taken to Methodist Hospital. She was released by Monday morning.

Thompson said the driver of the Altima left the scene on foot and that alcohol was believed to be involved because open containers of booze were found in the car.

Police did not immediately have a description of the Altima's driver, but the car's owner showed up to talk to police shortly after the crash.

"We don't know how the owner became aware that the vehicle became involved in the accident, but (the car) had not been reported stolen," Thompson said. "As far as I know ... the owner of the vehicle has cooperated with the investigators."

The fatal hit-and-run is the latest in a string of similar crashes in central Indiana. Police said most involve intoxicated drivers.
