Terrorists besieged in Iraq bank, 15 dead
BAGHDAD, (UPI) -- Iraqi security forces said they were surrounding a central Baghdad bank Sunday after suicide bombers and uniformed gunmen killed 15 and took hostages.

The United Arab Emirates' Gulf News said the insurgent raid began when a suicide attacker wearing an army captain's uniform detonated a bomb near the bank building.

In addition to those killed, 43 people were wounded and many bank employees were being held inside, the report said. The raiders posted snipers on the bank building's roof.

As the insurgents took control of the bank a total of eight explosions went off in the area as security forces and gunmen exchanged gunfire, and army helicopters flew overhead.

Gulf News reported Maj. Gen. Qassim Atta, a spokesman for Baghdad security forces, said it was unclear if the raiders intended to rob the bank, target its employees or simply destroy the building.

The attack came one day before the reopening of the Iraqi Parliament.
