Theft of M-16 rifle brings jail term
JERUSALEM, (UPI) -- An Israeli soldier who stole an M-16 rifle from a military post and then sold it to a civilian for $1,800 will spend 40 months in prison, a court ruled.

The soldier, a sergeant major in the reserves, removed a friend's M-16 from the post in July 2009 and drove it to a nearby location to hand it over to the civilian with whom he'd arranged the sale, Ynetnews.com reported Sunday.

Returning to the base, he joined in the search for the missing weapon, but later under questioning admitted to the theft, Ynetnews said.

The rifle has not been recovered.

"His deeds damaged the measure of confidence that must be placed in soldiers serving in the (Israel Defense Forces), including reserve soldiers," the judges wrote in their verdict. "This is someone who took advantage of his proximity to military arms in order to transfer them to someone over whom the army has no control."
