LONDON, -- A London traffic police officer was caught on camera driving the wrong way on a one-way street to ticket illegally parked cars, officials said.
The on-duty motorcycle officer drove into oncoming traffic to ticket the parking violators he had spotted,
Closed-circuit television cameras outside an electrical shop captured the officer traveling into traffic and then speeding off, just missing a moving car. The footage shows the officer removing a hand from the motorcycle handlebars and gesturing to angry bystanders who had confronted him.
Shop owner David Streadwick, 49, who witnessed the incident, said he was shocked.
"There was one point when I genuinely thought a car was going to hit him. The way he came down the road made me think this wasn't about road safety, it was just about raising revenue," Streadwick said. "This is making a mockery out of the system and victimizing motorists. I think an example needs to be made."
"We take such allegations seriously and an investigation is already under way," a spokesman for the Newham borough council said.
