Friends of a teenager who was hit and killed by a passenger train on the weekend say they are in shock.
Steven Proulx, 13, died instantly while trying to cross the tracks on his all-terrain vehicle near Saint-Janvier-de-Joly, southwest of Quebec City.
Proulx's friend Jimmy Trepanier said the teenager and another friend were riding ATVs on Saturday night when they tried to cross some railroad tracks near a field.
He said Proulx never made it across, and was hit by a train.
"I can't understand why this happened to him. He didn't deserve this, he was such a good little guy," said Trepanier.
In Quebec, it's illegal for anyone under 16 years of age to drive an ATV on a public road, but Proulx was riding off-road, which is legal.
"Everyone does that, it's not just one person. It's not his fault, it's just a freak accident," said Proulx's cousin Sabrina Boulay.
There were no lights or signs where Proulx was killed because it wasn't an official crossing.
Authorities from Canadian National Railway are investigating the accident.
