The eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway that link Field, B.C., to Lake Louise, Alta., have re-opened.

The highway has been closed since Jan. 15 due to an avalanche.

The westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada remain closed between Field and Golden, B.C., due an avalanche hazard.

The highway opening comes as a relief to the 200 residents of the village of Field, which is just minutes from the Alberta border, in the middle of Yoho National Park.

While Field residents usually stock up on non-perishable food at this time of the year in case of road closures, the community's only general store is quickly running out of fresh food.

The situation has been especially hard on visitors to Field, who've been stranded for days and don't have a stockpile of food.

Field is 528 kilometres east of Vancouver.
