POWNAL, Maine -- A 5-year-old boy was crushed to death by a tree Sunday in the town of Pownal.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Department said the child had been playing in a hole made by an uprooted tree that had blown over during last week's storm.
The boy's grandfather didn't realize the child was playing near the tree when he began to cut and remove it, investigators said.
The man cut the tree approximately 10 feet above the roots and when he did the root ball and remaining portion of the tree “kicked up” into position as if the tree trunk was standing. The child was pinned underneath the roots and remaining portion of the tree trunk and was not noticed for some time.
When the boy's grandfather didn't see the boy or his older sister he began looking for them and found a portion of the boy's sweatshirt under the roots. Investigator's said the man frantically tried to free his grandson while other family members called for help.
When help arrived, a pickup truck with an attached chain was used to remove the tree enough to free child.
The boy was taken to Maine Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
No names have been released.
Investigators from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the accident.
