SEATTLE, -- A truck carrying $400,000 worth of Russian king crab from Los Angeles to Seattle has disappeared, apparently the work of an organized crime ring, police said.
The trucker's documents and those of his trucking company appear to have been forged, The Seattle Times reported.
The trucker pulled his rig up to a Los Angeles Cold Storage Co. warehouse May 20 and hauled off the 25,000 pounds of crab meat, which was supposed to be delivered in Seattle May 23. The truck and its contents never arrived.
"We had an insurance guy tell us that guys who did this were just plain professionals to make a full load of crab disappear," Jerry Benzel, a dispatcher for New Sound Transportation, a Western Washington company that contracted with the truck driver to deliver the shipment, told the Times.
