U.S. markets lower on stronger dollar
NEW YORK, U.S. markets headed down Friday on a stronger dollar and mixed earnings in technology stocks Dell and Hewlett-Packard.
In early afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was off 96.50 points, or 0.96 percent, to 10,172.71. The S&P 500 fell 8.77, or 0.82 percent, to 1,066.86. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index was off 12.98, or 0.60 percent, to 2,165.97.
The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 1/32 to yield 2.571 percent.
The euro fell to a one-month low against the dollar to $1.2690 from Thursday's $1.2819. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 85.63 yen from Thursday's 85.32 yen.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index fell 1.96 percent, 183.30 points, to 9,179.38.
