MEXICO CITY (AP) — A U.S. Embassy official in Mexico City is using the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks to express solidarity with Mexicans over the drug cartel violence afflicting their country.

Charge d'Affaires John Feeley says that even though Mexico has no terrorist groups, the criminal gangs are using terror tactics to sow fear.

Feeley said at a 9/11 memorial Friday at the capital's Museum of Memory and Tolerance that the people of the U.S. stand with Mexicans in the fight against organized crime. That battle has killed more than 35,000 people since 2006.

Feeley mentioned several recent attacks by cartels on Mexican civilians, including an Aug. 25 casino fire in the northern city of Monterrey that killed 52 people.
